Recently I went shopping at Hobby Lobby with my aunt and practically drooled over all the fall décor. I love the smell of cinnamon pinecones and the fall candles. I love all the cute pumpkin signs and coffee mugs. I love the cozy throws. It all makes me want to sit by a fire on a rainy day with a good book and a hot coffee!
I love the changing of seasons and the beauty of the four seasons God created. But when it come to seasons of life, I don’t always feel so enthusiastic about change. I’d rather not go through the uncomfortable stretching that change requires.
But what does the Bible say about changing seasons? I decided to dig into this topic, and here are 5 truths about seasons:
1: God created literal seasons.
Then God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. Genesis 1:14-15 (NASB95)
“While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, And cold and heat, And summer and winter, And day and night Shall not cease.” Genesis 8:22
God made the seasons a constant to remind us of a very important truth, that God never changes.
2: God never changes.
“For I, the Lord, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed. Malachi 3:6
“But You are the same, And Your years will not come to an end. Psalm 102:27
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8
The unchanging nature of God gives us confidence for the changes that happen in life. Through every season, we can trust the faithfulness of God.
3: Seasons are a guarantee for us.
There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven— A time to give birth and a time to die; A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted. A time to kill and a time to heal; A time to tear down and a time to build up. A time to weep and a time to laugh; A time to mourn and a time to dance. A time to throw stones and a time to gather stones; A time to embrace and a time to shun embracing. A time to search and a time to give up as lost; A time to keep and a time to throw away. A time to tear apart and a time to sew together; A time to be silent and a time to speak. A time to love and a time to hate; A time for war and a time for peace. What profit is there to the worker from that in which he toils? I have seen the task which God has given the sons of men with which to occupy themselves. He has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also set eternity in their heart, yet so that man will not find out the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end. Ecclesiastes 3:1-11
The changing of physical seasons has been around from the beginning of time. The changing of seasons of life were too. Adam and Eve were made to experience the changes of marriage and a new relationship, new seasons of parenting and grandparenting and so on. Change is not a result of the curse. But the changing seasons of our lives are impacted by the curse/sin. We grow old. Relationships fall apart. Times of war and peace have come and gone throughout human history. Change has been a guarantee throughout all of human history. And when we experience change that is marred by sin, it reveals the eternity that is stamped on our hearts. It reminds us that we were not created for the brokenness around us. And praise God that He does not leave us without hope! (More on that later.)
4: Seasons teach us to rely on God and persevere.
Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time [ESV says “season”] we will reap if we do not grow weary. So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith. Galatians 6:9-10
A garden doesn’t get sown, tended, and harvested all at once. It takes time. And it takes trust in God who causes the growth. Life seasons don’t all happen at once, but we can trust that God is working in every season. And because our God is unchanging and faithful, we can persevere knowing that in due time He will cause the harvest.
5: Seasons remind us there is hope.
When the world feels like chaos, the constancy of spring, summer, fall, and winter remind us that God does not change and that there is hope for the future. Our hope is not in world events or technology or anything or anyone else other than Jesus Christ. Our Savior who paid the price for our sins by His death on the cross, rose from the grave conquering sin and death, and sits at the right hand of the Father as Lord of lords and King of kings is our reason for hope. Because our God, who does not change and never lies, has promised that Christ will have the victory. Every knee will bow and every tongue will confess Christ as Lord, and when He returns He will wipe away all tears from our eyes, death will be no more, and we will be with Him for all eternity.
As we watch the leaves change this fall, let’s praise God for the beauty in change and remember our reason for hope: Jesus Christ who is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
With love,
Kelsey
